Your website enquiry tracking should help you understand which marketing activities encourage potential customers to contact your business. However, having Google Analytics installed does not automatically mean your forms, WhatsApp links, and contact buttons are being measured correctly.

Missing events can make useful campaigns appear unsuccessful. Duplicate events can exaggerate results. A practical check should confirm that customers can contact you, their enquiries reach your business, and your reports record the intended actions accurately.

Start by Defining What You Want to Measure

List the ways visitors can contact your business. These might include a contact form, quotation request, booking form, WhatsApp button, clickable telephone number, or email link.

For each option, establish what your tracking actually measures. A WhatsApp click shows that someone opened the messaging link. It does not confirm that they sent a message. Similarly, clicking a telephone number does not prove that a conversation took place.

Keep these actions separate in your reports so that a button click is not presented as a completed enquiry.

Submit a Test Enquiry Through Every Form

Open your website and complete each enquiry form as a customer would. Use a clearly labelled test message and record the submission time and page address.

Check whether:

  • The form accepts valid information.
  • Required fields display clear instructions when left empty.
  • A successful submission produces a confirmation message or page.
  • The enquiry reaches the correct inbox or customer management system.
  • Your team can identify which form the enquiry came from.

Repeat the process on a mobile phone. A form that works on a desktop may still have problems with mobile layouts, dropdown menus, or submission buttons.

A confirmation message alone does not establish that the enquiry reached your business. Check the receiving system as well.

Check Website Enquiry Tracking in Google Analytics

In Google Analytics 4, visitor actions are recorded as events. Some events describe general activity, while others represent important business outcomes.

Google recommends the event name generate_lead for lead generation actions. A relevant event can also be marked as a key event so that it appears in reporting for important outcomes.

Open the correct Analytics property and use the Realtime report while performing a test. Look for the event associated with the action you completed.

For closer inspection, your website provider can enable debug mode and use DebugView to examine events from the test device. Google Tag Assistant or Google Tag Manager preview mode can help with this process.

Record the expected event name before testing. This makes it easier to distinguish your enquiry event from unrelated activity such as page views.

Make Sure Failed Submissions Do Not Count as Leads

Clicking “Submit” and successfully sending an enquiry are different stages.

Test an incomplete form by leaving a required field empty. The website should explain what needs correcting, and your successful enquiry event should not appear.

Then submit a valid test enquiry and check that the intended lead event appears once.

Google Analytics enhanced measurement can collect form interaction events, including form_start and form_submit. These still need to be checked against your website’s actual behaviour before you rely on them as evidence of successfully received enquiries.

If your tracking uses a confirmation page, ask your provider to check what happens when someone refreshes that page or opens it directly. These actions should not inflate your completed enquiry figures.

Test WhatsApp, Telephone, and Email Links Separately

Click each contact link and confirm that it opens the correct destination.

For WhatsApp, check the receiving number and any prepared message. For telephone links, confirm the number opens correctly on a mobile device. For email links, check the recipient address.

Next, check whether the intended event appears in Analytics.

Keep the event names descriptive so that reports clearly distinguish WhatsApp clicks, telephone clicks, email clicks, and successful form submissions. Google also distinguishes phone number click measurement from tracking actual calls.

Where possible, compare these actions with messages and calls actually received to understand how often initial interest becomes a conversation.

Investigate Missing or Duplicate Events

If an event is missing, first confirm that you are viewing the correct website property and testing the correct page.

Your website provider should then check the event configuration, consent settings, and any filters affecting the test. Browser privacy tools can also affect measurement. Google notes that consent settings and certain privacy controls can prevent events from appearing in DebugView.

If an event appears more than once, ask your provider to inspect whether multiple tags or triggers are recording the same action. For example, tracking may have been added through both a website plugin and Google Tag Manager.

When Google Ads is involved, also check whether the same enquiry is being counted through overlapping conversion actions.

Compare Reports With Your Enquiry Records

Review Analytics alongside your form records, inbox, customer management system, and other enquiry channels over the same period.

Compare equivalent actions. Successful form submissions should be checked against form records. WhatsApp clicks should be assessed separately from messages received.

The totals may differ because of consent choices, reporting delays, spam, repeat enquiries, or differences in what each system measures. Standard Analytics reports can take 24 to 48 hours to process data, so use Realtime or DebugView for immediate testing.

Investigate sudden changes and persistent gaps rather than assuming every difference means the tracking is broken.

Repeat the Checks After Website Changes

Retest your enquiry tracking after replacing forms, changing contact buttons, updating consent tools, redesigning pages, or launching new campaign landing pages.

Keep a simple record of the page tested, action performed, expected event, actual result, and test date. This gives your team something concrete to refer to when reporting changes.

Reliable website enquiry tracking helps you judge marketing performance with greater confidence. Start by testing the customer’s experience, confirm that the enquiry reaches your business, and then check that your reports describe what actually happened.
